Longtime readers of my work understand that I follow the most exciting tech trends on the edge of mass adoption.
These trends are experiencing exponential growth and creating extraordinary opportunities for financiers. I wish to make sure all our readers are prepared for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the image of what I see can be found in the next 12 months 1. 5G Devices Our brand-new 5G (fifth-generation) cordless networks are a topic I have actually been covering for years now.
Despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted supply chains last year, an excellent 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still sold. Specifically in the second quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, manufacturing hold-ups, and work interruptions. And all of this ultimately caused Apple delaying the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by two months.
When you consider all of that, offering 250 million systems is remarkable. More significantly, the hold-ups triggered by the pandemic developed a heap of suppressed demand. And that demand is now going to be pushed into 2021. In reality, I predict that more than 500 million 5G devices will be shipped in 2021.
Stage Three of 5G When I've spoken about 5G in the past, I've described its 3 different stages. In Phase One, the facilities of these brand-new networks is constructed out, including all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic wiring that 5G will require. In Stage Two, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Phase 3, 5G services start to be used. That's when we begin to see applications running on 5G networks. And my second 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will start Phase Three by this summer.
More and more consumers will go out to buy a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. 5G is going to open up a suite of amazing applications: self-driving cars and trucks, the Internet of Things, robotic surgical treatment, and more.
The investment chances going forward will be huge. CRISPR Genetic Modifying Stepping away from 5G, the next important innovation I anticipate in 2021 is CRISPR genetic modifying. It's one of the most amazing advancements in biotechnology.
